Defining a Freight Method

Define a freight method using the Add Freight Method Wizard on the Wizard Control Panel. Freight methods are indentified by a short code and can be given a brief description.

Calculation Methods:
Each freight method has a type of calculation method. One method--the item cost method--is the sum of freight amounts for each item ordered. Other methods use either a single domestic, APO, or international rate or a table of rates based on order amount or order weight. For all but the item cost method, a zone table can be used in addition to the weight or order amount to determine shipping rate. This is similar to how UPS or FedEx costs are calculated. The calculation methods are as follows and describes how international and APO freight is addressed:

  • Fixed Amount. Shipping total is a fixed amount. Separate amounts are used for international and APO orders.
Example: On all domestic orders, freight is $5.00. International is $10.00
  • Weight multiplied by a fixed rate. Item weight field must be filled in each product record. If not filled in, a default weight as set by merchant will be used. If no default weight is set, will be zero. A separate rate and optional additional amount is used for international and APO orders.
Example: On domestic orders, freight is $2.00 per lb. ($20.00 on a 10lb order) and $2.50 per lb plus $5.00 for international orders. ($30.00 on a 10lb order)
  • Order amount times a fixed rate. A separate rate and optional additional amount is used for international and APO orders.
Example: On domestic orders, freight is 10% of order total ($10 on a $100 order) and 10% of order total, plus $5.00, for international orders. ($15 on $100 order).
  • Total of shipping costs in product record. Shipping cost must be filled in each product record. If not filled in, a default shipping cost as set by merchant will be used. If no default shipping cost is set, will be zero. This amount is per unit. A multiplier and optional additional amount is used for international and APO orders.
Example: 3 widgets were ordered with shipping costs of $3.50 each and 2 gadgets were ordered with shipping costs of $ 1.25 each. ($13.00 for domestic order). International orders have a multiplier of .10 and $2.50 additional amount.($16.80)
  • Table lookup based on total weight. You will need to set up a table of weight ranges with desired shipping costs. This may be entered in or imported. Optionally, a separate rate column in table will be used for international or APO shipping.
Example: An order is 5lbs. The script will look for the corresponding range for 5 lbs and use the domestic rate for domestic orders and the international rate for international orders.
  • Table lookup based on order amount. You will need to set up a table of amount ranges with desired shipping costs. This may be entered in or imported. Optionally, a separate rate column in table will be used for international or APO shipping.
Example: An order is $100. The script will look for the corresponding range for $100 and use the domestic rate for domestic orders and the international rate for international orders.

Shipping Features

Each shipping method can be assigned the following shipping features

  • Insurance rate. Insurance amount is rate times Order Amount.  Insurance option can be selected by customer at checkout.
  • Order Handling Amount. Handling Charges are a separate charge and subject to separate taxation rules. This amount is in addition to any item handling fees in the product record.
  • Free Shipping on Large Orders. You can specify an order amount that will qualify the order to have free shipping. Any order total amount equal to or greater than this amount will qualify.
  • Minimum and Maximum freight amounts. For freight methods utilizing calculations, a minimum and maximum amount of freight charges can be specified. Different amounts can be specified for domestic, international, and APO.
